Reaffirming our values: A message from Providence Chief Executive and President Erik Wexler

As an organization that has been around for nearly 170 years, we have lived through many shifts in social and political dynamics. The world around us is constantly changing. But one thing that will remain the same is this: Providence will always be committed to serving those in need and to respecting the inherent human dignity of each person we serve. This is an integral part of the legacy entrusted to us by our founding sisters.

With a new administration in Washington, D.C, several policy changes have emerged by executive order. As we do whenever new laws are enacted, we are carefully evaluating these orders to understand what they mean for our patients, caregivers, physicians and communities. We are also well-aware that legal challenges and legislative actions are common in the lawmaking process, so it’s likely many of these new policies will continue to evolve.

We have received many questions from caregivers and medical staff about a recent executive order that has declared hospitals are no longer considered protected areas for immigration enforcement. It is important to remember that federal patient privacy laws are still in effect. In accordance with these laws, we want to reassure all patients that we will continue to safeguard their privacy and protected health information, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

We also want to reaffirm our commitment to creating an inclusive work environment that reflects the diverse communities we serve and to ensuring every person has a chance to live their healthiest life, especially among health disparate populations. In addition, we will continue to be a safe, welcoming place of healing for everyone, including members of the LGBTQ+ community. We believe this is an important part of delivering high-quality patient care, with respect and compassion.

As always, we will be engaged in regular advocacy on both sides of the aisle in Washington, D.C. On behalf of Providence, I look forward to being a voice for those who are most vulnerable and keeping you apprised as we help to shape policies that support the health care needs of our communities.

Yours in Providence.
